First annual Family Tree on the River Festival. The festival will be held June 27, 2015 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the West Columbia Riverwalk and Amphitheater area. The festival will combine education and fun for all ages of the “Sandwich Generation”.
The “Sandwich Generation” is the middle-aged generation who have both elderly parents and dependent children to whom they are caregivers, “three generations bound by caring”. 1 of every 8 Americans aged 40 to 60 are both raising a child and caring for a parent. In addition, 7 to 10 million adults are caring for their aging parents from a long distance. With the multi-generational challenges of working, caring for aging parents and children many individuals are unaware of the resources in our community that are available to them.
This event will bring the community and families together to heighten awareness of the special needs of the “Sandwich Generation”, as well as spotlight community support available to those working hard to maintain multi-generational families. In order to educate and celebrate the hard work, compassion, patience and dedication of the “Sandwich Generation” the festival will have educational tents, live music, dance lessons, elder chair yoga, various ethnic foods, children's games n crafts, pet parades and more.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the West Columbia Beautification Foundation.
